Zilzie know from good Shiraz, they have grown the finest fruit for decades and now retain access to the most splendid vineyards. The quality of their winemaking has claimed thirty trophies since they embarked on their own label. At Zilzie, Shiraz is taken rather seriously, the finest harvests from good Barossa vineyards are sourced to be fashioned into a lush and velvety, mouth filling experience. Corey Ryan spent two decades crafting the most memorable vintages at Henschke, Penfolds and McWilliam, not to mention tours of duty in la Vallée du Rhône, he understands old vine Shiraz very well. Kym Teusner shares Ryan's devotion in the pursuit of resuscitating very old, low yielding, dry grown vineyards, Teusner honed his own artisanal approach under the tutelage of grand masters Rolf Binder and Torbreck. Zeppelin is the Messrs Ryan & Teusner bond, to capture the splendour of old vine Shiraz and make it accessible to all Barossa enthusiasts.

Zeppelin was created by Artisans of the Barossa Corey Ryan and Kym Teusner, with a view to crafting full flavoured Barossa wines of immense personality and style. Labelled in commemoration of Barossa Valley's German heritage, the brand was named in honour of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, a brave and progressive entrepreneur. Big Bertha is a bold, well structured Shiraz with real flavour, fashioned for early appreciation from fruit grown to precious old vineyard sites in the northern viticultural precincts of Barossa Valley.

Ferdinand is fashioned from fruit grown to a single low yielding, eighty years old vineyard in the ancient winemaking commune of Greenock. A very simplistic hands off approach to the vinification followed by extending ageing in a selection of well seasoned oak barrels softens the tannins while allowing the sensational character of old vines Barossa Shiraz to speak for itself. The nose is engaging and complex, the palate generous and full bodied, tame oak and supple tannins, a brooding, no holds barred example of the classic Barossa style.

Kym Teusner is an enthusiastic winemaker. He was moved by the vine pullouts of old Barossa vineyards to take an interest in restoring destitute but precious sites which today produce some of the finest fruit. Amelie is sourced from a single, eighty years old Eden Valley property owned by the Sons of Eden, a great vineyard for yielding harvests of Shiraz displaying excellent colour, ripe tannins and generous flavour. Traditional vinification techniques and a hands off philosophy are employed to craft wines that are full of character and charm.

The Zema family go back a long way with Coonawarra wine, to the early 1950s when Samuel & David Wynn re established the historic John Riddoch wineworks under their own label. Matteo Zema was one of Wynn's first viticulturalists, hand pruning, picking and planting vines during the era when Coonawarra Shiraz was most successfully marketed as Claret. Grown to rich Terra rossa soils, Zema are renowned for the most memorable vintages in Coonawarra, their estate grown Shiraz is an edifying wine of charm, character and grace.

Zema own a precious slice of Coonawarra's remarkable Terra rossa, a thin metre of soil over deep formation of limestone, whence to source limited harvests of world class Shiraz. Family Selection is a small batch wine of great intensity and exceptional depth, superior concentration and maximum development. Spicy pepper and sweet berry fruit flavours abound, before a lingering finish on a length of firm oaky tannins, a fuller style of Shiraz with excellent balance, profound structure, elegance and poise.

From low yielding vines planted to the rich Terra rosa soils of Wrattonbully. Big on flavour and deep in colour with an intense aroma that displays classic spice and ripe berry notes supported by well integrated oak, Shiraz has long been a wine that Yellow Tail does best. Many of the oldest and most precious Australian Shiraz vineyards can be found around the hamlet of Greenock, near the western ridge of Barossa Valley. Yelland & Papps are relative newcomers but they have already established an enviable reputation. They treat their land to traditional old world farming techniques. Sourced exclusively off the unirrigated eight acre block, established 1973 at the western extremity of Yarra Yering. Cool climate new world Shiraz starts here. A high inclusion of stalks and whole bunches are added back to the traditional half tonne open tea chest fermenters to lend juiciness plus extra cut and persistent tannins to the sweeping finish. Basket pressed and aged eighteen months in a high proportion of new French oak. A slight westerly aspect and propitious clay soils yield a wine that's a perfect foil for the feminine Dry Red No.2

This is the first time that Yarra Burn Shiraz has been entirely from the Pyrenees region, reflecting the magnificent red vintage in the region. 2003 was warm and dry but also very low-yielding, resulting in fruit with fantastic concentration of flavour. An honest, western districts Shiraz with warm Rhône-like qualities, offering earthy flavours of blackberry and plums, thoroughly distinguished, impeccably fine and tight.

Yalumba are synonymous with Shiraz and have amassed a comprehensive knowledge of the finest viticultural precincts in all Australia. The estate patriarch shares a history with the founders of Barossa Valley and the first planters of Australian Shiraz. Y Series is a thoroughly elegant Shiraz offering a vibrant berry nose, hints of licorice, spices and delicious mocha oak. The Hill-Smith family were at the very genesis of the Australian wine industry and made a major contribution to the development of Cabernet Shiraz as an internationally recognizable genre of wine. Yalumba was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, migrant and brewer, he settled in the village of Angaston. Smith and Smith Jr planted their first vines by moonlight. Samuel liked the name Yalumba, an indigenous term referring to all the land around. The Signature has been relied upon by enthusiasts of the enduring claret style, ever since inaugural vintage of 1962.

In addition to being sourced from a number of very old Barossa vineyards, Octavius is treated to an extended period in American oak octaves of ninety litres capacity, the only red wine in the world to be matured in such small barrels. The secret of the wine not becoming overpowered by oak lies in the wood itself, which is open air seasoned at Yalumba's own cooperage for eight years before the octaves are coopered and put to use.

Exclusively Eden Valley Shiraz with an alluring twist, a wine of concentrated flavour and aroma. There is great diversity across Eden Valley vineyards and a wide range of styles is produced, from those with a much finer, subtle aromatic to those that are denser, fuller and much richer. What links them all together is an underlying finesse and purity, the hallmark of Eden Valley Shiraz. Yalumba are lead the nation for the partisan efforts at Viognier, Shiraz is sourced off mature vines up to forty years of age, for the construct of an exquisitely perfumed, elegantly proportioned wine.

Yabby Lake begin with a commitment to listen to the land. To grow only the right varieties, the right clones on the perfect sites, row by row, vine by vine. Hand picked grapes and a measure of whole bunches from a single estate vineyard at Teurong are sent to traditional open top fermenters for a fortnight of vinification. Batches are pressed into 500Litres French oak puncheons for malolactic and a year of age. A perfumed, spicy style, concentrated yet silky over a length of structured tannins, bright fruit characters throughout, wonderful elegance and depth of flavour.

Tod Dexter has made a very special wine out of a small planting of superb Shiraz. In 1997 when the Yabby Lake Vineyard was acquired, it was identified that there was a thin strip of soil through the middle of the property which was unsuitable for Burgundian varietals. It was decided that the two small blocks in the section would be best planted to Shiraz, a bold move in 1997 for the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay obsessed Mornington Peninsula. Two ancient Australian clones were selected, BVRC 12 and PT23, both known to be outstanding performers.

Shiraz is a wine that Xanadu does best. Their salubrious vineyards are situated within the best climes where conditions are nothing short of idyll. The vines seem to love producing the topical milled spice bouquets and firm palate structure of essential Margaret River Shiraz. An outstanding quality of harvest every year is treated to a close scrutiny of fruit, ensuring that nothing but the healthiest berries are considered. An artisanal vinification and extravagant barrel treatments achieve a piquantly aromatic Shiraz of virile game characters and toasty oak.

Owned by the same group who bring us Yering Station and Mount Langi, Xanadu is situated within an exclusive coterie of eminent Margaret River estates. Exmoor may be a second tier label but nothing is done to a lesser measure at Xanadu. All vines are closely managed to yield fruit at full physiological maturity and complete tannin ripeness, for wines which are brimming with profound Margaret River regionality. A juicy Shiraz wine with the redolence of a fragrant Viognier perfume lift, judiciously aged in a high portion of French oak.

Shiraz is a wine that Xanadu really does best. Their magnificent vineyards are situated within the most propitious mesoclimes, the growing conditions here are nothing short of an idyll. Xanadu's closely coddled vines love to yield harvests of the most succulent Shiraz, redolent of bright milled spice bouquets, supported by the firm palate structure that's essential of mighty Margaret River Shiraz. The finished wine is treated to the extravagance of fourteen months age over gross less in a selection of seasoned and new, French barriques and larger format oak vessels.

Xabregas are true terroirists, as the focus goes beyond the concept of new world wines. Xabregas don't adhere to the stereotype of an Australian style, choosing instead to bring the unique expression of their single vineyard estate to the fore. Vines were expertly planted to follow a strong line of alluvial iron based gravels that concentrate on the hill sides of each vineyard, reminiscent of the Rhone Valley's terraced slopes.

A pure Shiraz wine drawn from vines planted to historical grounds at the heart of Coonawarra. The sites date back to John Riddoch's original development of the district as a sheep grazing and fruit growing colony. The precious fruit from Wynns V & A Lane blocks exhibit a signature density and richness, the defining characteristics of this location along the cigar shaped Terra Rossa strip. The exceptional quality of Shiraz derived from this superior terroir moved the Wynns winemaking team to isolate and vinify the parcels into a single bottling.

V & A Lane is a long, straight road which drives through Coonawarra's famous Terra rossa strip at its midpoint. Originally surveyed in the 1850s, V & A Lane divides the bygone electorates of Victoria and Albert. Traditionally, it has been used as a landmark to separate northern and southern vineyards in Coonawarra, a prestigious piece of real estate that's in high demand by the most eminent labels in the land for establishing blocks of superior Shiraz vine.

Distinguished Langtons Classification. A piece of Australian wine industry folklore, Michael was conceived as an exclusive bottling of two exceptional barrels, it still represents Wynn's best of vintage. Named after Wynn's young son, Michael 1955 is a legend of the Australian wine industry. It gained much richness from the prior use fortified wine cask in which it was matured. Good bottles of the original release still represent a memorable tasting experience. An expression of the finest Coonawarra vineyards, only ever made in the most outstanding vintage years.

Distinguished Langtons Classification. Michael is Wynns best of vintage Shiraz. The first Michael, labelled as Hermitage, was a special edition from the 1955 vintage, made after David Wynn noticed the outstanding quality of wine within two particular barrels, he ordered they be bottled separately. Michael vintage 1955 is an industry legend, good bottles of the original release still represent a memorable tasting experience. A regal Shiraz wine from nothing but the very finest Coonawarra vineyards, only made in years when fruit is of extraordinarily high quality.

Launched in 1952 as Coonawarra Estate Claret, Wynns have long maintained the reputation as producer of Coonawarra's most essential Shiraz. It's patent aromas are reminiscent of ground black pepper, mulberry and raspberry, through to blackberry at the riper end of spectrum. Oak is used to mature and increase the wine's complexity, without dominating its distinctive cool climate Coonawarra Shiraz character. A reliable, graceful medium bodied wine with a clean crisp finish, fashioned to the inspiring traditions of the original Wynns Hermitage.

Shiraz is an important part of Coonawarra tradition, indeed the oldest vines ever established, circa 1890 were Shiraz. Wynns Johnsons Shiraz was planted in 1925 and can best be remembered for producing the timeless and enduring vintages of Wynns Coonawarra Hermitage. Wynns planted Shiraz to prime sites throughout the 1990s, the quality of fruit from these choice vineyards has improved from year to year, they are now fully mature and yield harvests of the finest Coonawarra Shiraz.

George Wyndham became father of Australian Shiraz after planting the nation's first commercial Shiraz vineyard in 1830. The enduring Bin series is the most approachable range of wines within the Wyndham portfolio, high quality efforts which reflect the generosity of style which has made the Wyndham label famous. Once crafted by the legendary Nigel Dolan, Bin 555 has been refined into an elegant Shiraz exhibiting ripe fruit flavours, as supported by fine oak and sleek tannins, the long, persistent palate culminating in a smooth and lasting finish.

Named after a set of medieval leg pillories which remain preserved as a museum piece in Oxfordshire. The team at Woodstock consider themselves lucky to be caring for some of the oldest McLaren Vale vines. Fruit for inclusion into The Stocks is sourced from thirty one rows of ancient McLaren Vale vines, planted circa 1900 on a sandy north slope at the Woodstock property, only the most exceptional barrels of aged Shiraz are selected. The palate is plush with an intensity and complexity of flavour that will continue to evolve and mellow in the glass.
